Whilst Air India employees are not enjoying the world’s largest office space, they certainly are experiencing something quite unique.
Stationed at Nariman Point, Mumbai, the staff are treated to personal space of palatial proportions.
The rare privilege afforded to staff at Air India is 840 square foot to oneself. The area – equivalent to a mid-sized apartment – is one of the largest space to employee ratios in the world. 
The current largest office building in the world is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, known affectionately as The Pentagon. The Pentagon employs 23,000, and is comprised of 3.7 million square foot.
The space to employee ratio is nowhere near as luxurious as that offered to Air India staff, with just 160 square foot per employee available.
Air India currently occupies 388,310 square foot of Mumbai office space, spread over 14 floors. Currently employing just 268, staff are just 19 to a floor.
Air India said that, at its peak, 1,500 to 2,000 employees worked in the building. The building, which is owned by the aviation company, subsequently has almost 64,000 square foot of vacant space, with several floors completely empty.
Four floors are leased by State Bank of India, and a further two by TCS. This leaves four floors vacant.
The sub-optimal use of space is costing the a substantial amount each year.
Apple’s new ‘Mothership’ headquarters is to become to largest office space by diameter, dwarfing the Pentagon in terms of required land. The actual office space is, however, considerably less, at 2.7 million square foot. With as many as 20,000 employees in the Mothership, they will each be afforded 135 square foot each.
